Upcoming Events
|
I sift through dozens of events each week to find the best ones for local business owners who want to meet other cool people. If you’re hosting something and think it might be a fit, let me know here.

-
Tonight @5:30PM – Selecting the Right LLM for Orgs: If your company is thinking of using the data you own to train your own LLM, you’ll want to check this out. Two speakers will dive into the nitty-gritty of developing your data strategy, and choosing the right LLM.
-
Jan 27: The Board Walks: Created by Elle Beecher, The Board Walks brings curious people together for a 5-mile brainstorm every Saturday morning. Not limited to founders, but many of the areas most interesting business owners are regulars.
-
Jan 30 – Millennial Entrepreneurs Meetup: If you remember Saturday morning cartoons, corded phones, or your “tuition fund” was a stack of Beanie Babies, this is your crowd. Host Yarin Gaon is a 4x founder, and served as EIR at Manifold, turning around distressed portfolio companies before launching his current PE firm, Fractional Partners. Join him and other ~30+ founders to chat business (and the good old days).
-
Jan 31: Female Founders Outlook for 2024: Joyce Durst is the award-winning founder and CEO of a $50 million+ software consulting firm called GAP. Prior to that, she was CEO at Pinion software, which raised $21M and sold to GigaTrust in 2008. She’ll be joining three other founders for this panel discussion, followed by drinks and networking.
-
Feb 1: Your Deck Sucks (online): Fundraising soon? Jacquline Samira is the founder and CEO of Howdy, and in this talk she’s gonna show how she raised $21 million from investors like Y-Combinator and Greycroft without ever sending a deck to any of them.
-
Bonus – Feb 23-25: Men’s Retreat: Local podcast host, Danny Miranda, is organizing a men’s retreat in Austin next month. If you haven’t seen Danny’s work yet, it’s superb. He’s interviewed everyone from Steven Pressfield to Alex Hormozi, and hundreds in between. People interested in the retreat can fill out this form.

Cool ideas and stories published by founders in ATX

How Much Money Do You Actually Need? Sam Parr launched a new podcast where he talks with high-net-worth people about the real ups and downs of how money affects your life. In the first episode, he chats with one founder who had a ~$200 million exit, and another person (a lawyer) who pays himself over $10 million a year. They talk about “immigrant guilt,” monthly burn rate, how much you actually need to be comfortable, and more.
-
Bootstrapping an $80 Million Company: This conversation between Noah Kagan and Tim Ferriss is excellent. It’s super tactical, and they dig into things like Noah’s approach to negotiating, his KPI dashboard for AppSumo (including real numbers), how Tim thinks about competing in today’s content landscape, and more.
-
What Makes A City Immortal: A fascinating concept from Jason Scharf, host of the Austin Next podcast, on how a city needs three types of people to reach escape velocity and make a name for itself in the history books. Big question is, which one are you?

Artist of the Week
|
Can you believe this is Austin? David Aguilar goes by @AerialAustin_ on Instagram and, as the name would suggest, specializes in incredible aerial shots of the city.
|
He does custom prints too, so if you’re looking for some suh-weet shots of the city for your office or home, check out his work here.

|
Le Garage

Okay, so this is very cool. Twice a year, Le Garage rounds up dozens of local Austin brands and brings them all together in one spot.
|
It’s taking place this Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 27-28) and seems like a cool way to find unique stuff for your place, and also meet some other local founders.
|
Doors open at 11AM both days (or there’s a VIP ticket for $25 that’ll get you in at 9:30). You can buy tickets at the door or get ‘em here.
|
|
That’s all for this week. If you liked this, do me a favor and forward it to someone you know!
|
You can also email me here if you’re hosting something for local founders that might be a fit for the newsletter.
|
Until next week,
